Indoor Track Season – Good or Bad?

With Indoor Track and Field season quickly approaching it time to look back and see if Indoor Track and Field is a good option for someone like me, a middle distance runner. Now I have not talked about myself a lot on the blog yet but today I am.

If you don’t know too much about me I am a collegiate track and field runner who specializes in the 400m but with several injuries in the past, my events have moved to the long end of middle distance running rather than something quick like the 200 to accompany my 400m. So looking at indoor season is this an opportunity that I could really take and possibly do well in or is it something that I should use as training and focus on my outdoor season?

Pros of Running Indoor

  • 600m is an indoor only event (the happy medium between fast and long and also my best event)
  • Weather is not a factor in running conditions
  • It seems like you are moving faster

Cons of Running Indoor

  • Tight tracks make for tight turns and tight turns make it hard on my legs
  • 200m tracks make a 400m have 4 turns which slow down the times

Personally, I think the indoor track season is a great thing. It gives track athletes another opportunity to run and it provides several events that you do not have the ability to run in the outdoor season. For me personally I always have a great time doing it and it is usually a much better season for me than outdoor, but I plan on changing that this year.

If you are interested in my goals for my indoor track season this year they are below:
